Fuse (electrical) - In electronics and electrical engineering a fuse, short for 'fusible link', is a type of overcurrent protection device. It has as its critical component a metal wire or strip that will melt when heated by a prescribed (design) current, opening the circuit of which it is a part, thereby protecting the circuit from an overcurrent condition. Antifuse - An Antifuse is an electrical device that performs the opposite function of a fuse. Whereas a fuse starts with a low resistance and is designed to permanently break an electrically conductive path (typically when the current through the path exceeds a specified limit) an antifuse starts with a high resistance is designed to permanently create an electrically conductive path (typically when the voltage across the antifuse exceeds a certain level). Arc-fault circuit interrupter - An arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) is a circuit breaker designed to prevent fires by detecting non-working electrical arcs and disconnect power before the arc starts a fire. Advanced electronics inside an AFCI breaker detect sudden bursts of electrical current in milliseconds, long before they would trip a regular overcurrent circuit breaker or fuse. Circuit breaker - A circuit breaker is an automatically-operated electrical switch which is designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overload or short circuit. Unlike a fuse which operates once and then has to be replaced, a circuit breaker can be reset (either manually or automatically) to resume normal operation.
